Prospect Watch: Nine different Chihuahuas reached base safely multiple times as the offense carried El Paso to the win. Nick Solak led the way with a double and a home run. During his current five-game hitting streak, Solak has four home runs and eight RBI. The 31-year-old is now slugging .625 for the month to fuel a 1.057 OPS.  The former Texas Ranger is hitting .333 on the season and has 40 runs scored in 41 games. While Solak is primarily a first baseman, he has played second and the corner outfield spots the last few years to boost his positional flexibility as he seeks another call-up.  Solak had four games with the Pirates last year but was a regular in the Rangers lineup in 2020 and 2021. … The other big hit of the game came courtesy of El Paso’s other Nick, Nick SchnellSchnell slugged his eighth home run of the season and was 2-for-3 before being removed for a pinch hitter when a left-handed reliever came on. The former first-round pick had 23 home runs and 18 stolen bases last year in the Nationals organization. This season, Schnell has struggled to consistently get hits (.216 average), but has made up for it with a .495 SLG. On the year, 13 of his 24 hits have gone for extra bases. He’s done almost all his damage against right-handed pitching, posting an OPS nearly double his output against lefties. … Padre fans will remember Mason McCoy as being sure-handed with the glove, but an extremely light bat. The 2026 version of Mason McCoy would like to have a word. After three more hits Wednesday, McCoy has his average back over .300.  His current .829 OPS would be the highest of his career.  His 12 stolen bases with only one caught stealing lead the club in SB%. … Kyle Hart threw two scoreless innings of relief, marking his first appearance since May 12 without allowing a run. He walked a batter, giving him as many walks in 7.2 innings in El Paso as he did in 16.2 innings with the Padres. … The good news for David Morgan, he topped out at 99 mph on his fastball while throwing his curve at 84 mph, giving him a fantastic delta.  The downside, which is partially due to playing at El Paso, his spin rate on his fastball was down roughly 20%, making his fastball appear straighter.  One of his four-seam fastballs was launched for a home run.  Morgan was sent down at the end of April due to walks, and to his credit, he has now walked a batter since May 3.  The downside… Morgan has a 7.71 ERA during that span.

Corpus Christi Hooks 11, Missions 3

Key Stats: RHP Ian Koenig 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K; PH Ethan Salas R; 2B Carson Tucker 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI; 3B Luis Verdugo 2-for-2, R, 2 BB

Prospect Watch: After having a career-best start last week, Ian Koenig was unable to replicate the success. The righty allowed three runs over five innings while walking two, though he did tie his career high with seven strikeouts.  The former undrafted free agent finishes May with a very respectable 3.76 ERA and 1.25 WHIP for the month. … While the Hooks ultimately put up five runs in the ninth to turn this into a blowout, the Missions’ one shot to make this into a game came courtesy of Carson Tucker, who lined a 2-run double to get the Missions to within three runs. It was Tucker’s first double since May 9 and his first multi-hit game since May 16. Since moving to the top of the order, Tucker – one of the organization’s better stories through the first six weeks of the season – had been stuck in a 3-for-26 slump.  Tucker had a career .295 SLG coming into this season and currently sits at a more respectable .407. … Tucker’s double scored Ethan Salas, who came on late to pinch hit.  He reached on a catcher’s interference in his lone time at the plate. … The other run scored belonged to Luis Verdugo, who reached base in all four of his plate appearances to break out of his own recent slump. This is only the fourth multi-hit game of the month for Verdugo, who is hitting .246 with a .629 OPS for May. The 25-year-old brother of Padres prospect Rosman spent the bulk of his career in the Cubs organization.

Transactions: The Padres released Leandro Cedeño. After spending the last three years shuttling between the minors and big leagues in Japan, Cedeño was hitting .315 with a .949 OPS for the Missions in his return to the U.S. He had not played since May 15 when he left the game with an undisclosed injury. We wish him the best wherever his next opportunity takes him.

South Bend Cubs 13, TinCaps 5

Key Stats: RHP Maikel Miralles 2.2 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 2 BB; RHP Ty Adcock IP, 3 H, 4 ER, BB, 2 K; LHP C.J. Widger 2 IP, H, 3 K; CF Kasen Wells 2-for-4, Assist; SS Justin DeCriscio 1-for-4, R, BB; C Lamar King Jr 1-for-3, 2B, R, 2 BB; LF Alex McCoy 1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB

Lamar King Jr. has been hitting the ball hard more consistently. (Jeff Nycz)

Prospect Watch: The score was more lopsided than it appears as the TinCaps scored four runs in the eighth without the benefit of a hit. The club walked six times in the inning and 11 times in the game to go along with six hits. The TinCaps got on the board early thanks to back-to-back doubles from Lamar King Jr. and Alex McCoy. It was the second consecutive game with a double for King, who is finishing May strong.  After hitting .217 with a .660 OPS in April, King’s average is up to .297 in May with an .854 OPS.  The two walks by King were his first walks in over two weeks. … McCoy’s RBI double was his fourth extra-base hit in the last four games.  McCoy broke his bat on the double, blooping it down the line over the third baseman’s head. McCoy now leads the Midwest league in doubles (17) and is fourth in home runs (nine). … Reliever Ty Adcock‘s path back from the IL continued to be rocky as the righty gave up four runs in his rehab inning. The 29-year-old, who signed with the Padres after appearing in the big leagues in each of the last three seasons, has given up six runs in three appearances since joining Fort Wayne last week. He’ll likely be optioned to El Paso when he officially comes off the injured list in June. …  After the game was already out of hand, C.J. Widger came on to stop the bleeding. The 27-year-old lefty allowed only one baserunner over two innings, striking out three to tie his season high. The second-generation player has held the opposition scoreless in nine of his 12 appearances this season, but his 6.39 ERA is skewed by allowing six runs over 1.1 innings in an early outing. Originally a 10th-round draftee of the Rangers, the lanky left-hander signed with the Padres early in the 2024 offseason, only to be selected by the Giants in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft a month later. When San Francisco released him last summer, the Padres quickly brought him in for the second time in 10 months.

Storm 10, Inland Empire 66ers 4

Key Stats: RHP Jesus Castro 4 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 5 K; RHP Brandon Langley 2 IP, 5 K; CF Ryan Wideman 3-for-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB (35); 2B Jose Verdugo 3-for-5, 2 R, RBI, 3B; SS Jorge Quintana 1-for-3, R, BB; C Yoiber Ocopio 3-for-4, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI; LF Conner Westenburg 1-for-3, BB, R, SB (16)

Prospect Watch: Storm outfielder Conner Westenburg pulled off one of the most exciting plays in all of sports with a straight steal of home to help spark a two-out rally for Elsinore. With the club down by one, the undrafted free agent took off for the straight steal with a right-handed pitcher on the mound, diving across the plate to tie the game. That stolen base unraveled the whole inning as the next seven batters reached base. Ironically, the inning finally ended when Qrey Lott was thrown out at home trying to score from second on a Westenburg single. After leading the Cal League in stolen bases for most of April, the Texas native went nearly four weeks without adding to his total. He has now stolen a bag in back-to-back games and is up to fourth in the league with 16 stolen bases. Westenburg has been a key contributor at the plate as well as on the bases. He currently has a six-game hitting streak and is hitting .313 with a .838 OPS in his first season of pro ball. The McNeese State product has contributed significantly to the Storm putting up a .307/.382/.470 line out of the nine spot in the lineup. … Not to be outdone on the basepaths, Ryan Wideman swiped third base twice in this one, pushing his total on the season to an MILB-leading 35 and putting him on pace to challenge for 100 stolen bases this season. With three hits in this one, last year’s third-round pick is hitting .323 in May and has not gone longer than three games without a stolen base since his running-wild campaign started on April 23. … With Ty Harvey back on the IL, Yoiber Ocopio is taking full advantage of the extra playing time. After hitting .083 a few weeks ago, the 21-year-old is in a hot stretch, with at least one hit in seven of eight starts, and has 7 hits with two home runs in his last 18 at-bats. The 21-year-old has raised his OPS from .408 a few weeks ago to .753 as he gets his first extended opportunity in the Cal League.
